Ratan Tata's golden words: the 4 things you shouldn't be shy about

The news of veteran industrialist Ratan Tata's death has disrupted social media algorithms. Feed on X and elsewhere have since been flooded by a deluge of news features, listicles, quotes, explainers, blogs, throwbacks, and commemorative tribute content honouring the legacy of the former Tata Group chairman.

Ratan Naval Tata died at the age of 86 on Wednesday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness, leaving behind a void in the heart of his admirers.

If people's personal anecdotes and reflections are any guide, they didn't just look up to him, but also lived by what a post describes as "Ratan Tata's golden words".

"Don't be shy about four things:

  • Old Clothes because your clothes don't define your talent.
  • Poor friends because there is no status in friendship.
  • Old parents because what you are today is because of them.
  • Simple living because success can't be judged by appearance.
Ratan Tata"
As for whether the quote is correctly attributed to Tata is still being determined, but it's not a far cry from the kind of life he led.

Tata often wore simple clothing, doing away with the kind of attire that comes naturally to the elite.

When it comes to friends, he had a diverse bunch from all walks of life despite coming from one of India's most successful business dynasties.

Tata also cherished his relationship with his parents, honouring their sacrifices and seeking their guidance throughout his life.

His lifestyle warped from opulent: he preferred simplicity over extravagance.
